Question: What tiny wildflower found in Colorado's high country is named after one of the planet's largest mammals?
It's the "elephant's head" flower. When viewed close-up, this distinctive pink and burgundy flower resembles the head and upraised trunk of an elephant.

Sometimes referred to as "little pink elephants," the elephant's head flower is a member of the snapdragon family. It was originally discovered in Greenland but is found throughout the West, usually between 8,000 feet and 13,000 feet in altitude. The plant, which grows from a vertical stem that's between 10 inches and 20 inches high, likes moist meadows along cold streams, springs, ponds and lakes.
